Quick look: The new MR16 spots with GU5.3 socket

Another novelty from Philips Hue

Unsurprisingly, Philips Hue also presented new light bulbs with a socket used for the first time at the IFA, in addition to the new cameras and the contact sensor. The MR16 spots with GU5.3 socket will be available from mid-September as White Ambiance and White and Color Ambiance.

The new lamps can easily replace conventional spots used in a 12-volt system. Until now, such MR16 spots were not available from Philips Hue.

“The Philips Hue MR16 smart bulbs work on the same 12-volt low voltage as conventional MR16 bulbs. They are compatible with most transformers,” says Philips Hue.

The most important technical data of the Philips Hue MR16 spots

  • Light output at 4,000 Kelvin: 400 lumens
  • Socket: GU5.3
  • Height: 49mm
  • Diameter: 50mm
  • Power: 6.3 Watt (WACA) / 5.1 Watt (WA)
  • Standby: maximum 0.5 Watt
  • Radio: ZigBee & Bluetooth

The new spots will be available in stores as early as September. Prices start at 39.99 euros for a single spot with White Ambiance technology. Spots with coloured light are available for 64.99 euros. Both models are also available in a double pack with a small price advantage.

  1. I bought 2, arrived today… was shocked they are all metal body and heavy! I’ve put them in the bathroom for a fun shower for now, but disappointed they are not as bright as the standard Philips led mr16 I had in the spots.

  2. Hi.

Is a transformer required for each bulb, or can one transformer work for 3 of they are within a 10 foot row in a ceiling?

Is there a recommend resessesed ceiling socket recommended for ghe GU10 or GU5.3 bulbs?

Only reason why I was considering getting a GU5.5/M16 over the GU10 is because it looks like the GU5.3 is almost 2x as bright as the GU10?

    Thanks,

  3. I’ve looked at various Philips Hue stores and the lumens are different for the coloured bulb, depending on the country:
    – US: 420 lumens, 6.5 W
    – UK: 400 lumens, 5.1 W
    – Aus: 320 lumens, 5 W
    – NZ: 400 lumens, 5.1 W

Do you know why there’s this difference, and can I buy a bulb in, say, the US and use it in NZ?

    Thanks!
