Hueblog: Group multiple motion sensors directly in the Hue app

Group multiple motion sensors directly in the Hue app

Function comes from Hue Labs

Hue Labs, the former beta environment within the Philips Hue app, is now history. Almost all the functions that were previously only available exclusively there have already been integrated into the Hue app. Since the last update, motion sensors can also be grouped directly in the Hue app. I explain exactly how this works in this article.

“By grouping several motion sensors and cameras, they can show the same behaviour”, explains Philips Hue. “This is useful for large or unusually shaped rooms.” For example, I use two sensors in my stairwell – one at the top and one at the bottom of the stairs. No matter which direction you come from, the light is always switched on properly.

It’s so easy to create a group with several sensors

To group several sensors together, simply open the settings in the Hue app. There you will find the new menu item “Device groups”, which is still labelled “Beta”. You can use this to create a new group and then select which sensors should be part of the group. You can choose not only the normal motion sensors from Philips Hue, but also outdoor sensors and Hue Secure cameras. Important: Each sensor can only belong to one group.

You then have the option of applying the settings of a sensor to the entire group or using default values. You can then of course make your own settings again via the “Device groups” menu item.

In addition to the various time windows and scenes, you can also set the motion sensitivity for each individual sensor and the daylight sensitivity for the entire group in the settings.

  2. I’m a bit worried this is in “beta” format.

It was in Labs (sensor pair) for ages, so you would have thought they had fixed all the bugs by now.

  3. How can I see room temperature? Before it was available in the hue labs. Now it isn’t possible to find it, not such a great Ux

Man muß hier also etwas vom Minimalwert abweichen.
