Adaptive Lighting: firmware update available for the first users

New HomeKit function is rolled out slowly

Update: After the first reports in October, Adaptive Lighting seems to have been made more accessible since today. With the firmware 1941131070 for the Hue Bridge, I am also able to activate the function in Apple’s home app today. Just have a look if it works for you too.

At WWDC this summer, Apple introduced a new function for HomeKit: Adaptive Lighting. Lamps connected via HomeKit are automatically controlled throughout the day to create the ideal lighting scene at any time.

In practice, this is quite simple: to activate Adaptive Lighting, a small icon is selected in the HomeKit app via the colour selection function for the desired lamp. The colour temperature is then automatically adjusted throughout the day, from soft light in the morning to bright, cool light at midday and relaxing, warm colour temperatures in the evening.

These conditions need to be met for adaptive lighting

Unfortunately the function cannot be used directly with iOS 14, an update from the manufacturer is necessary. As more and more users on platforms such as Reddit or Facebook are reporting, the new HomeKit function was released with the 1941132020 firmware update of the Hue Bridge.

Unfortunately this version does not seem to be distributed immediately to all users. We have a total of four Bridges in use, which, according to the latest updates, run on version 1941132000 or 194105600. There is currently no manual way to update the firmware.

But even if you already have the firmware necessary for adaptive lighting on your bridge, there are still some hurdles to overcome. For example, the feature only works with Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance lamps, and a HomeKit control unit with a current operating system is required – for example an iPad or Apple TV.

  1. Seems the Hue bridge also accepts non-Philips lights for Adaptive Lighting. With FW 1941132070 on the bridge, iOS offered me to enable Adaptive Lighting with an MLI ZBT-ExtendedColor 2.0 Zigbee bulb connected to my Hue bridge. And as far as i can tell it works.
