Voice control with Alexa has actually always been a pretty reliable story. Apart from the fact that you can only pair a bridge with the Alexa Skill, of course, but that is hopefully something that will take care of itself with the upcoming Matter update.

However, it is not yet time and in the social networks and also here in the comments I have been reading more and more complaints around the topic of Alexa and Philips Hue for about a week. It seems that the voice control no longer works reliably for many users.

The latest reviews for the Philips Hue Skill on Amazon are more than mixed. Here are some examples from the past few days:

  • Again and again the devices are not accessible, everything always has to be set up again!
  • For a few days now, nothing works via Alexa. There is always an error message that the server cannot be connected. The Skill can’t be reinstalled either.
  • It worked fine for years and then suddenly nothing. Reconnecting the skill is not possible. Whose fault is it? Amazon or Philips?

Apparently, not all installations are affected by the problem, because the lights in my home can still be controlled without aany problems. Therefore, I can’t really help you with a solution to the problem. However, you are welcome to use the comments to exchange ideas on the topic of the “Philips Hue Alexa Skill”.

  1. Yeah this was a big problem for me this week. I had an account in the Hue app but this account apparently didn’t work on the Hue website, which was a big part of the problem. I “created” an account on the website using the same email address and added my Home by pressing the button on the Bridge when indicated. This then allowed me to reenable the skill and brought back Alexa voice control, but the app and website report that my account doesn’t have the admin role for my Home, and I can’t seem to address that. Hue support have been great via X and they’ve escalated the request so I’m waiting to find out what comes next.
