Philips Hue released an interesting update on Wednesday. However, version 5.17 did not initially deliver the promised innovations. The new compact view could finally be activated in the evening hours. In this article, I’ll show you exactly how it works and what the new view looks like.

After updating the Hue app, simply tap on the icon with the three dots in the top right-hand corner. In the following menu, click on “Edit ‘Home’ tab” and then on “Cards” at the bottom right. Finally, you only need to confirm the changes once and you can use the new view.

The individual rooms and zones no longer extend across the entire width of the home screen, but are divided into smaller tiles. This allows you to see significantly more rooms at a glance. In my example, there are six rooms instead of four, and without the security area at the top, there are even eight rooms instead of five.

You can still switch the rooms on and off as usual using the switch. If rooms or zones are switched on, you can adjust the brightness: To do this, simply hold down your finger on a tile and then move it up or down. Unfortunately, this does not work with rooms that are switched off, which would be even more practical.

It certainly takes a little getting used to, but I like the new view quite a bit. So good that I’m using my Philips Hue app with it for the time being. Let’s see if the new compact view proves itself in everyday life.

Over the last few years, I've become a real expert when it comes to Hue & HomeKit. I now have over 50 lamps and numerous switches in use. I'm happy to share my experiences with you in my little blog.

  1. In this case, “karten” translates to “cards” in the English language version, not “maps”
