Philips Hue White Ambiance Filament: First detailed impressions

Classic look with new functions

Shortly after the introduction of the Philips Hue Filament bulbs, I had to listen to my wife saying: “The light is far too yellow.” No wonder, because the classic lamps were previously only available as Philips Hue White with a fixed colour temperature of 2,100 Kelvin. That's pretty warm light.

This week, Philips Hue officially expanded its product portfolio and now offers all five models of the Filament lamp as White Ambiance. For us, this means in practice: the colour temperature can be freely adjusted. And that from 2,200 to 4,500 Kelvin.

The highest brightness is achieved at 2,700 Kelvin with 550 lumens. This is a colour temperature that roughly corresponds to the classic incandescent lamp and also what is the standard setting for Philips Hue. Interesting: The normal coloured Philips Hue lamp with 806 lumens reaches a maximum brightness of 570 lumens at these 2,700 Kelvin, which is only slightly brighter than the new White Ambiance Filaments.

Competing products from other manufacturers can only keep up to a limited extent. The filament lamp with adjustable white tones from Müller-Licht Tint can shine colder and warmer, but not brighter – it only achieves 380 lumens. Likewise, Philips Hue scores with a great design of the LED tubes, which are arranged in a circle within the lamp. They are much more filigree than those of the competition and even let a little light through to the inside, which makes for a great look.

In addition, the new lamps are of course compatible with all the extras that are only available with Philips Hue. Entertainment functions and dynamic scenes are not available with White Ambiance models, but you can set the switch-on behaviour after a power failure and of course also use HomeKit without detours.

Unfortunately, this also has its price, because the new White Ambiance Filaments are quite a bit more expensive than the previous White models. Here is a short list of the five new filaments:

Now I'm curious to see how the new White Ambiance Filaments perform in everyday life. I'm planning to install several Edison lamps in the bedroom, and I'll give you more impressions in the course of the month. For the moment, I have already prepared a rather detailed video (in German) for you:
