Philips Hue introduces its own transformer for MR16 bulbs

New product in Europe

Just under two years ago, Philips Hue launched its first MR16 spotlights with GU5.3 sockets. The big difference is that, unlike “normal” Philips Hue bulbs, they do not operate at 230 volts. Instead, just like classic MR16 bulbs, they run on 12 volts. This means that a transformer is required.

However, some transformers can cause problems with the power supply. That’s why Philips Hue published a list of compatible transformers some time ago, which you can download here as a PDF.

If you want to replace an incompatible transformer or use the right hardware for a new installation, Philips Hue now offers an MR16 transformer. It is already listed in the official Philips Hue online shop, but no specific price has been given yet. So far, it is only available in Europe.

“Made for Philips Hue MR16 bulbs. With this EMI-compliant transformer, you can safely install your smart MR16 bulbs,” says the product description. “The transformer converts the power in your home to the low voltage used by the MR16.”

Quite interesting: The MR16 transformer from Philips Hue has a service life of up to 40,000 hours and comes with a three-year warranty – which is longer than usual.
