In early September, Philips Hue unveiled several new hardware products at IFA in Berlin; I’ve already taken a closer look at a few of them here on the blog. In addition, the company announced several new software features. While no specific date was given for “Backup & Restore“, one was provided for Custom AI Behaviors. “Custom AI Behaviors will be rolled out as part of a software update for the Hue Bridge Pro in early October,” the company stated on September 3.
A quick glance at the calendar tells us: Early October has already passed; we’re now in the last third of the month. It looks like it will be late October after all: Philips Hue has confirmed to me that the update with the new AI features is scheduled to be released next week.
Custom AI Behaviors can do significantly more than the existing AI assistant
So far, I haven’t used the AI assistant in the Hue app. In fact, I’ve even disabled the button on the Hue app’s home screen because it hasn’t been useful to me yet. With Custom AI Behaviors, that could change, as there will be significantly more possibilities.
Using natural language, you can specify exactly what lights, switches, or sensors in your home should do. Want a quick example?
If the “On” button on the Hue dimmer switch is pressed after 8:00 p.m., activate a scene in the dining room and cycle through the “Northern Lights,” “Soho,” and “Focus” scenes with each press of the button.
Personally, I’d love to be able to start the lights in the garden and on the Christmas tree with a different scene each day around Christmas time. Just to add a little variety without having to constantly fiddle with it. I’m curious to see if this will work with Custom AI Behaviors…
