When comparing Philips Hue light strips with those from other manufacturers, such as Govee, people often ask whether individual segments of a Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip can also be switched off. Until now, this has not been possible, but now it seems that this is about to change. At least, that’s what I noticed after installing the Hue Neon Gradient Outdoor Lightstrip, which will be released in November.
The Cosmos effect is used in some Halloween scenes, and you can see the result in the title image above. The light strip is colored green in some segments and completely turned off in others. In the Halloween scene, the green sections also move randomly, creating a spooky atmosphere.
Today, I tried out the whole thing with a few other gradient light strips, such as the new Hue Flux Lightstrip and the Hue OmniGlow Lightstrip. Even the “old” Hue Ambiance Gradient Lightstrip can completely switch off some of its segments with the “Cosmos” effect.
What about manual control?
So far, this new mode only seems to be possible with a few selected effects. In addition to complete shutdown with the Cosmos effect, different brightness levels are used for the Fireplace effect, for example. However, there is currently no way to use these options manually.
To do this, Philips Hue would probably have to integrate another mode into the app in addition to the three existing modes: linear, mirrored, and diffuse. And even if that happened, the whole thing would still have to be integrated into the user interface in order to be able to select the exact sections that should not be illuminated.
In any case, I find the whole story interesting. I will definitely stay on the ball and let you know if there are any developments regarding this new feature.

Try the wakeup scene with natural lighting on the Philips Hue festavia string. It will start with every led individual until the whole sting is lid up.
I have been using this since the first Hue Festavia. The lights are above my bed and give a great scene before sleeping and with waking up.
