In recent months, a new product from Philips Hue has not quite received the attention it deserves. It’s the Philips Hue Tento, a new series of ceiling lights from Philips Hue. The Tento series was presented for the first time in June and the market launch in the EU is now imminent. It will probably start in August.
The Hue Tento will be available in many different versions, with seven different models at the start, each of which will be available with a black or white housing. And as I can already tell you, angular versions are also being planned.
However, Philips Hue is focussing on round ceiling lights at the start. Here is a brief overview of the different models:
- Hue Tento White: 29.1 cm (69.99€)
- Hue Tento White Ambiance: 29.1 cm (89.99€) / 42.1 cm (119.99€) / 54.2cm (159.99€)
- Hue Tento White Ambiance and Colour: 29.1 cm (109.99€) / 42.1 cm (149.99€) / 54.2cm (199.99€)

I was able to get my hands on the Hue Tento at an event in Hamburg. As far as the material is concerned, the quality is really no comparison with a Hue Surimu or Hue Datura. The Hue Tento series is really very, very simple. But once mounted on the ceiling, you don’t usually touch it for years.
More importantly, it uses the same LED technology as other ceiling lights from Philips Hue. So you don’t have to make any compromises here.
Hue Tento compared to other ceiling lights from Philips Hue
To emphasise the advantages of the Hue Tento ceiling light, it is worth comparing it with the Philips Hue Aurelle, the first LED panel from Philips Hue. The Hue Aurelle is equipped with White Ambiance technology and is available, for example, in a round version with a diameter of 39.5 centimetres. The list price including dimmer switch is 179.99 euros and the maximum brightness is specified as 2,450 lumens at 4,000 Kelvin.
Although the 42.1-centimetre Hue Tento does not come with a dimmer switch, it also costs significantly less at 119.99 euros. With up to 3,100 lumens, the Hue Tento is also significantly brighter than the Hue Aurelle.
Hue Tento compared to a ceiling light with an E27 socket
Of course, you can also equip a simple, ideally even existing ceiling light with Hue light sources. A single E27 bulb with White Ambiance technology costs €39.99 from Philips Hue and provides up to 1,100 lumens. The double pack is sold for 64.99 euros.
A little brightness will always be lost in a ceiling light, as the bulbs are in the lampshade and possibly even behind a diffuser.
The smallest Hue Tento with White Ambiance will already be available for 89.99 euros. Compared to a ceiling light with E27 bulbs, you also benefit from a much lower overall height, as the Hue Tento is just 3.1 centimetres high. Depending on the interior, this can look significantly more stylish.
My conclusion: it can be worth the wait
If you still want to equip one or two rooms with Hue, then the Hue Tento is an interesting series that is well worth waiting for. They are certainly not design objects like the new Hue Datura, but the manufacturer has made no compromises in terms of light output and light quality. And the Tento isn’t completely ugly either, as there is even a small amount of light shining towards the ceiling through a thin slit. As soon as the ceiling lights are available on the market, I will certainly present them to you again.

Will they dim to zero? I purchased a similar, not hue, product for $32 cdn. They do not dim.all they barely dim not uncommon with led lights. Even hue bulbs suffer this affliction.
