It has been requested for many years, now it is finally here: the Ambient Gradient Lightstrip. A light strip from Philips Hue that can display several colours at the same time. It is joined by another newcomer, the new Play Gradient Light Tube, and the two well-known luminaires from the Signe collection get a gradient upgrade.
Next week it’s finally that time again: Philips Hue will present new products. And what we already know from various leaks is more than promising: brighter bulbs, some gradient products, filament lamps with White Ambiance technology or E14 bases and, in all likelihood, a batch of new ceiling lights. Conversely, this also means that some Hue installations will grow in the coming weeks.
After we could already give you more informations about the Philips Hue Gradient Lightrip Ambiance, now follow a few details about the upcoming floor and table lamp Philips Hue Gradient Signe.
We still have to wait about a month, then Philips Hue will officially announce the Gradient Lightstrip Ambiance. Until now, not much more was known than a single image, but today I can give you the first technical details. For example, the light strip, which is equipped with IP20 protection, will be slightly brighter than the normal Lightstrip Plus, which we already known for years.
Actually, it sounds pretty great: you can easily expand the Ambilight of your Philips TV with Philips Hue light sources. You don’t even need the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box to do this, instead you just click through the TV menu a bit and you’re ready to go. What sounds so simple, however, currently seems to be causing big problems again.

In addition to the criticism around the widgets, one thing can be read again and again in reviews and comments around the new Philips Hue app: users would like to see the timer function back. Shortly after the launch of the new app, already more than one and a half months ago, Philips Hue promised to bring back the functionality with a future update.
Even though I personally find the foundation that Philips Hue has laid with the new app quite appealing, overall I still find a lot missing in the current version. In particular, I think the tile view and the constant switching from one bridge to another are extremely annoying. Of course, there are some apps that offer multi-bridge functionality, especially iConnectHue or Hue Essentials.
It is now more than ten years since George Yianni had an idea that inspires us every day. Back then, at Philips Lighting, which now goes by the name Signify, he developed a web application to control Living Colors lamps. What was supposed to be a simple solution to avoid having to spend weeks building prototypes of real remote controls ended up being a whole new product.
If you’re a diligent reader, you’ll have heard from us that Signify is working on a new Philips Hue App. And as of today, version 4.0 of the Hue App is available, bringing with it numerous new features. New design, new experience: Featuring a more intuitive interface that reflects the way you want to use your smart lights, the new app offers faster performance and a sleeker feel.
Philips Hue has now been on the market for almost ten years and is currently the clear number one when it comes to smart lighting. But the manufacturer from the Netherlands certainly cannot rest on its laurels. It is about time to pick up the pace again – because the last really big update of the Hue app was back in April 2016.
