Sonos and Philips Hue: Alarm clocks next?

Combining lighting and audio

Philips Hue and Sonos have been collaborating since last year. Initially, Philips Hue lights were integrated into Sonos Voice Control to enable control via the multi-room speakers’ local voice assistant. Unfortunately, this still only works in English and French; no other languages are on the horizon yet.

In early September, Philips Hue announced the second phase of the collaboration. An update is expected later this year that will allow Sonos speakers to be controlled via Philips Hue switches. For example, you’ll be able to start or pause music playback using a Hue Smart Button, adjust the volume using the rotary knob on the Tap Dial Switch, or skip to the next track in a playlist using the Hue dimmer switch.

This is pretty exciting, since it means you won’t always have to unlock your smartphone to control your Sonos speakers. This is especially convenient if you’d rather not use voice assistants.

Will music and lighting be combined for smart alarm clocks?

There are likely quite a few households where Sonos and Philips Hue coexist. Furthermore, there’s already a feature that both platforms offer: alarm clocks. You can set the Sonos app and connected speakers to wake you up with music. And the Hue app allows for a light alarm using smart lighting.

To me, bundling these two features together in a single app is the next logical step. I can easily imagine that Philips Hue will tackle such a feature next after the integration launches, which is scheduled for November or December.
