Philips Hue Secure doorbell: The first official graphics

Leak in the company's own app

A few days ago, I made my first assumptions about a Philips Hue doorbell. The fact that we have now received confirmation so quickly is thanks to an attentive Hueblog reader and a less attentive development team at Philips Hue. Let me introduce you today: The Philips Hue Secure doorbell.

With the latest update, Philips Hue has introduced a new QR scan for lamps, lights and devices. However, the “no QR code” menu not only lists the devices we are familiar with, but also a “Hue Secure doorbell”.

So Philips Hue itself is causing a pretty big leak, because the smart doorbell from Philips Hue has of course not yet been officially announced. According to my information, this is not expected until the fall – so it is all the more surprising that the preparations for the doorbell have apparently already been made in the Hue app.

Philips Hue Secure doorbell comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

The Philips Hue Secure doorbell has a classic design and will probably be connected to the system in a similar way to the already familiar Hue Secure cameras, which you can currently get particularly cheaply as part of a 25% promotion. First, a Bluetooth connection is established with the smartphone, then the Wi-Fi connection is established. A QR code from the owner’s card is also required to set up the doorbell, so the camera will probably transmit the video signals in encrypted form.

And another thing can already be seen from the information in the Hue app: The Philips Hue Secure doorbell will probably not have a rechargeable battery, but will need to be wired to a power supply.

Other technical details, such as the resolution of the camera, are not yet known. The Hue Secure cameras are currently only equipped with a 1080p resolution. Will the upcoming doorbell perform better in this discipline?

  1. I hope it comes with HomeKit support. As a developer, I know that Matter and HomeKit are pretty similar and relatively easily interchangeable. Philips say they will add Matter support when that standard supports cameras, but that is years away. Instead, Philips should add support for HomeKit now and then replace HomeKit with Matter when it is ready. I want their cameras, but I won’t buy them unless they support local video and integrate with the rest of my smart home, especially a doorbell!

  2. Is this a joke? Their cameras still suck 18 months after launch. Expect 1080P doorbell at a laughable price point. Where they lack in quality, they certainly make up for it in price.

  3. Not going to expand my hue system any further. After they removed hue light sync from new ambilight TVs. Rather than fork out for a sync box I’ve opted to move away from Hue as the bulbs fail and as I’ve moved until a larger property, instead of around buying 40gu10 type hue bulbs required for the larger home ( plus a couple of pendant bulbs) I’m researching other products. Similarly new TVs will not be Philips. That’s how you destroy customer loyalty. Similarly the doorbell cam has zero chance of being considered here
