All new Philips Hue lights support Matter over Thread

Almost exactly a year ago, Philips Hue launched the first lights that supported a direct Matter connection via Thread in addition to Zigbee and Bluetooth. This means, for example, that Hue Essentials bulbs can be connected directly to another smart home system without any workarounds.

In recent days, the question has come up repeatedly about what’s new with Philips Hue. I can now confirm: All new lights, bulbs, and light strips support “Matter over Thread.” Even the new Philips Hue wall light module, the Hue x Nanoleaf Controller, offers direct support for Matter.

However, you should approach the direct Matter connection with caution. For simple light bulbs or classic lamps, such as the new outdoor wall sconces and wall spotlights, this might still be a great feature. But we mustn’t forget that Matter does not yet support color gradients. This means that all gradient products can only access their full range of features via the Philips Hue app.

So, for now, the most practical way to use a Hue product remains the Hue app—ideally with a Hue Bridge.

Apple Home Support for Hue Cameras

Somewhat under the radar, Philips Hue has launched another Hue Secure camera; the battery-powered model is now also equipped with a 2K sensor—something I’d seen coming quite a while ago.

Regarding Hue Secure—which wasn’t mentioned at all during the launch event—another question inevitably arises: What’s the status of the promised Apple Home support? Unfortunately, I have to tell you that Philips Hue hasn’t provided any further information. From what I’ve gathered over the past few weeks, they’re still working on implementing it.
