Community question of the week: Using the Play Gradient Lightstrip under the TV

Keep using the old light strip

In our small community forum, which we hope to pimp up a little in the first half of the year, Tomm asked a rather interesting question about the Philips Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip. Of course, I have the right answer for you, even if it’s unfortunately not positive. But let’s start with the user’s request:

I got myself a new 65-inch TV and the Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip for 65 inches to go with it. Now I have my old 55-inch light strip left over. Can I perhaps place it horizontally under the TV and continue to use it with the Hue Sync Box?

Not such a bad idea, you might think at first. However, there are two problems: The 55-inch-long Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip is 216.5 centimetres long and therefore of course significantly longer than the bottom of a TV. It also cannot simply be shortened.

In principle, the Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip can be used in the Hue app like a normal light strip. If you now have the idea of perhaps mounting it on the lowboard under the TV, as there is enough space there: unfortunately, that won’t work either. When used in a Hue Entertainment area for Hue Sync, the Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip is always used in a fixed position ‘behind the TV’ so that the TV picture is complemented by the light on the left, top and right sides.

These are currently the best solutions for four-sided Hue ‘Ambilight’

However, there are two solutions that are ideal for the lower side of the TV. If you want to stick a strip of light behind the TV, you can use the Hue Ambiance Gradient Lightstrip, which is 2 metres long and can be shortened every 12.5 centimetres. Alternatively, there is the Hue Play Gradient Tube, which can be placed under the TV or mounted on the wall.

Philips Hue Play Gradient Light Tube

Bring the cinema home with the Play gradient light tube large in black. Place or mount beneath a TV to cast a blend of colorful light. Rotate the tube to shine it in any direction — a perfect complement to surround lighting.

  1. I have an LG 77” and I used (2) 65” kits to go around it completely with no gap and no over lap!

  2. Hello,
    I have a Hue Box 8k.
I like everything, but I can’t figure out how to make the lights not turn on during the day? Because I really don’t need that light during the day, especially on a sunny day.
I have HomeAssistant and Homey, but I couldn’t set the automation to not turn on the lights at all, because the Box 8k turns them on later anyway.

  3. I have a 65 inch strip on tv and cut down 2 m strip ( gradient) under tv behind AV unit. Works great but cost too much!

  4. You can also use Hue Playbars underneath if you have a few lying around. I did this before purchasing the light tube. Unfortunately even with the large light tube, it leaves gaps on my 77″ LG CX.

    1. Honestly at that sort of cost for installation I’d just be using fancyleds at £179 for a hdmi sync box and 96led/m light strip

  5. Is the gradient lightstrip 2m has still only 3 zones of colors when using ambilight ?
That’s mean it is not the same sharpness of colors as gradient 55′ 65′

    1. Uhh, there definitely is not a zone every 12.5 cm. At the very most you will get three zones, and in certain orientations (perpendicular to the TV, like if you put it along a wall on the side of your room) you will only get two. And there is not even any smooth transition between the zones.
