Community question of the week: Are Hue Secure cameras compatible with Apple Home?

It could all be so simple

Philips Hue’s basic idea for the Hue Secure cameras was pretty simple: they started with a closed system to only transmit camera recordings in encrypted form and thus offer a high level of data protection. Things are now a little different.

Since December 2024, it has also been possible to access the live feed of a Hue Secure camera via the three platforms Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings – but then explicitly without encryption from device to device. A short and concise question from our small community forum is no coincidence:

Are the Philips Hue Secure cameras compatible with Apple Home?

The quick answer is: No. At the moment, Philips Hue cameras do not support HomeKit. And at least that is not planned for the future. But there is a plan B.

The long answer is therefore: at some point, Philips Hue Secure cameras will be compatible with Apple Home. Philips Hue had already announced at the launch of the cameras in September 2023 that it wanted to offer support for Matter and thus also a connection to Apple Home.

There is only one problem with this: the Matter smart home standard does not yet include any cameras. At some point, support will be added once a video standard has been agreed. New Matter versions are usually announced in May and November. After that, however, it usually takes some time before the new features are supported by all platforms, with Apple in particular always taking its time. And the Hue Secure cameras also have to go through a certification process first.

My camera tip for Apple Home

If you are looking for a camera that supports Apple Home, then take a look at the Eufy E30 indoor camera, which is available from Amazon for around 80 euros. It offers a connection to Apple Home and many other extras via the Eufy manufacturer app, such as 4K resolution, AI tracking and 360-degree control.

  1. It would be really useful if Philips Hue published an API so that other platforms such as Home Assistant could access the unencrypted live streams.

My Hue Secure Floodlight camera connects to api.eu.secure.meethue.com when displaying the live stream to my Google Nest Hub which hints that such an API may exist …

    1. Philips should have used the industry standard RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol), which would allow Home Assistant integration.
