Not a day goes by without questions in my inbox or in the small Hueblog community. With this e-mail from Philip, I would like to draw your attention to a topic that I am sure many of you are interested in: The backup function, which has been in development for quite some time, but has never been officially announced until now. Let’s take a look at Philip’s question first.
Hello, unfortunately I’m too stupid to transfer the old Hue Bridge settings (Bridge from 2018) to a new Bridge. Do you have any reading tips?
The bad news is: There is no tip for transferring the settings from one bridge to another. Philips Hue once offered such a function to transfer the data from the old, circular Bridge to the new ‘square’ Hue Bridge. Since the old Bridge is no longer supported, this function is no longer available. In any case, it was not possible to transfer data from a second-generation Bridge to another Bridge. This is exactly what Philip intends to do, but there is no real reason to do so.
At the latest with the introduction of the multi-bridge feature last year, I think it would be incredibly important to integrate a function for transferring data from one bridge to another. At the moment, you have to delete lamps, rooms and settings on the first Bridge and then add everything manually on the second Bridge if you want to expand your system with an additional Bridge.
And as there is still no backup function, things look really bad in the event of a fault. There is currently no chance of automatically restoring your system when a new bridge is installed. This is no longer acceptable for such a sophisticated smart home system in the year 2025.
However, I can assure you that we are still working on a backup function. I firmly believe that this software feature will be introduced this year.
