A new Philips Hue product in November? While this may sound unusual at first, it’s easily explained. The Philips Hue Dual Slim Downlight, now available in two different sizes, was actually announced back in September—though only as a side note in a press release for the North American market. The product wasn’t shown at all at the major Hue event in Berlin, so it had actually flown a bit under the radar until now.
The Philips Hue Dual Slim Downlight is now available in the U.S. and Canada—and it’s definitely interesting. It comes in 4-inch or 6-inch diameters and costs $99.99 each. That’s an interesting pricing strategy, since the technical specifications of the two lights differ significantly
The larger of the two Philips Hue Dual Slim Downlights reaches a maximum brightness of 1,230 lumens at 4,000 Kelvin. The smaller model, on the other hand, only reaches 900 lumens. Otherwise, there are no differences between the two recessed spotlights.
The light ring on the Philips Hue Dual Slim Downlight can be controlled separately
The ceiling spotlights, which are IP44-rated for splash protection, feature state-of-the-art technology. In addition to Bluetooth and Zigbee, they also support Matter over Thread. Furthermore, they are compatible with all current Hue features, including MotionAware.
What’s particularly exciting is that it’s not just the downward-facing downlight that can be controlled via the Hue app. The light ring around the spot’s housing can also be adjusted through the Hue app. Both lighting zones support the full White and Color Ambiance spectrum. As seen in the first product images, the downlight can also be completely turned off, leaving only the light ring active. This is great for use as a nightlight.
Whether and when the Philips Hue Dual Slim Downlight will also be available in Europe is currently completely up in the air. However, this product category has historically been more prevalent in the U.S. market.
