Schedule function for Hue Secure appears in the Hue app

Not yet functional

Last week, Philips Hue released the first update of the year for its app. Version 5.33 officially brings a small improvement for Gradient lamps. Under the hood, however, a little more seems to have happened with this update, especially with regard to Hue Secure.

If you tap on the small plus symbol at the top right of the Automations section of the Philips Hue app, you will find a new type of automation at the bottom of the list: “Arming schedule – Automate your Secure system to arm and disarm at specific times.”

Unfortunately, this function is not yet available. Your own time zone is supposed to be confirmed right at the start of setup, but no data is loaded at this point, so the process cannot be continued. This is somewhat surprising, as a time zone can be set for the Hue Bridge in the settings of the Hue app.

At this stage, I assume that the previously announced function is simply not quite ready yet and will probably be activated with the upcoming update to version 5.34.

Unfortunately still no geofencing for Hue Secure

From my point of view, switching the Hue Secure system via fixed scheduling can only be the first step. It would be much more important to integrate a proper geofencing function, as is already offered by a number of smart home apps.

After all, we now always have our smartphone with us and can pretty much determine when someone is at home and when everyone in the household is out. And this is exactly when the Hue Secure system could be activated automatically. Unfortunately, I can’t yet tell you whether Philips Hue is working on such a function.

  1. Was literally coming to this site to check if there is any news on the Hue Secure geofencing, and haven’t even had to ask it… The strange thing is, that the app itself has been supporting geofencing for years now, with the possibility to automate turning on/off lights when one gets home/leaves. Not sure why they haven’t managed to implement the same for arming the Hue Secure part of the ecosystem.
