Significantly longer lifetime: The new Philips Hue GU10 spots

These are the numerous improvements

I’m currently staying near Eindhoven, but for once not to visit Philips Hue’s headquarters. Instead, I’ve moved my home office to a holiday home for a few days. For this reason, I can’t give you a “real” impression of the new GU10 spots yet, but at least we can take a look at the technical data together.

The new generation of GU10 spotlights from Philips Hue (available in the Hue-Shop) has some exciting improvements in store. I have already told you that they are brighter, and White Ambiance and White and Colour Ambiance now also achieve up to 400 lumens at 4,000 Kelvin. Even more impressive, however, is the increase in standard white, where the new GU10 spotlights achieve up to 350 lumens.

Despite the improved brightness, power consumption has also been reduced. Instead of 5.7 watts, it is now “only” 4.2 watts. That doesn’t sound like much, but together with a halved standby consumption of just 0.25 watts, this improves the energy efficiency label from G to E. The result of this improvement is also that Philips Hue is once again authorised to sell the GU10 spotlights in California.

Another small improvement: the diffuser of the spots has been slightly adapted and is now flatter. The overall height of the spots has been reduced by 1 millimetre to 57 millimetres. The diameter remains the same at 50 millimetres.

The GU10 spotlights can now be dimmed down and should also last longer. The lifespan is specified by Philips Hue as 25,000 hours, previously it was “only” 15,000 hours. With an average use of 5 hours per day, the new GU10 spots should therefore last 5 years longer – although this is more of a theoretical figure.

The beam angle of just over 40 degrees has remained unchanged. If you want a wider light distribution, I recommend the new slim recessed spotlights that Philips Hue has launched in Europe in two different sizes and colours.

Ceiling lights are also being equipped with a new generation

All the ceiling lights from Philips Hue, for example the Runner spotlights or the large Centris, are now also being equipped with the new GU10 generation. So you should be careful not to buy an “old” model, especially in the shops.

The GU10 spotlights from Philips Hue are getting a technology upgrade. White Ambiance and White and Colour Ambiance are now up to 400 lumens brighter. With standard white at 2,700 Kelvin, the brightness is now 50 per cent higher than before.
