Will the Sonos integration with Philips Hue be expanded further?

Controlling the speakers

Last fall, Philips and Sonos launched their partnership. It all began with the integration of Philips Hue into Sonos Voice Control. Using simple voice commands that are processed locally and don’t rely on the cloud, you can easily control the Hue lights in your home via Sonos speakers. So far, there’s been just one hurdle: even years after its launch, Sonos Voice Control is still available exclusively in English and French. That’s particularly frustrating for me here in Germany, of course.

I’ve now heard that Philips Hue and Sonos are expanding their partnership this year. However, this time it’s not about controlling smart lights via Sonos speakers, but rather the exact opposite.

Apparently, Philips Hue is working on an option to control Sonos speakers via Philips Hue switches. Start and stop playback, play previously saved favorites, or adjust the volume. In the future, all these actions should also be assignable to Hue switches. The Hue Tap Dial Switch would undoubtedly be ideal for this task, as it features four neutral-labeled buttons as well as a rotary dial—perfect for adjusting the volume.

What else will be possible with Sonos and Philips Hue in the future?

I was already thinking ahead when the partnership was announced last September. What if you could take your music with you as you move through the house? Combined with MotionAware, which launched last year, it’s entirely possible to detect movement from one room to another. Then the music could automatically transfer from one room to the next.

But that’s still a long way off. For now, Philips Hue wants to focus on controlling Sonos speakers at the touch of a button. Would this potential feature be something you’d be interested in?
