The Philips Hue Secure Video Doorbell remains one of my favorite gadgets from the Hue ecosystem; in particular, the light alert triggered by the doorbell button is a real highlight. Philips Hue will soon be offering a new replacement part for the doorbell in its store—and there’s a good reason for that.
“Hue Doorbell Camera Security Key” is the official name of the new replacement part, which is already listed in the store but isn’t in stock yet. That’s why I can’t give you an exact price just yet, but I’d guess it’ll be somewhere between 7 and 15 euros. The set includes a small security screw used to secure the doorbell to the wall mount, as well as the appropriate tool for tightening it.
The screw on the Philips Hue Secure Video Doorbell can’t be easily removed
It’s actually not a standard Torx screw, but a Torx-TR (Tamper Resistant) screw. There’s a small pin built into the center of the star that prevents standard Torx bits from fitting into it. As I eventually discovered, you won’t find a bit like this in a standard bit set.
The screw and tool are included with the doorbell. You should keep the tool in a safe place just in case. But it’s certainly possible to lose the screw—for example, during installation. In any case, I was worried that this tiny part might end up in the flower bed.
In my opinion, the best solution would be for Philips Hue to simply include a second screw with the doorbell—that should be financially feasible. If you don’t want to have to hunt for a matching replacement part at a hardware store yourself in case of loss, an official solution will be available soon. The only question is: at what price?
