Last October, I was able to announce that Philips Hue was working on AI-generated scenes for its lighting system. The feature was officially announced in early 2025, and at least the icon has already appeared in the Hue app. Now the official rollout is beginning, albeit with some limitations.

“Earlier this week, we started an initial rollout of the Hue AI assistant to our English-speaking users in the Benelux”, explains Hue inventor George Yianni. “Our fantastic team has been working hard to teach generative AI models enough about color science and lighting design to be able to respond in an intuitive and beautiful way to natural language control commands and scene descriptions.”

How the Hue AI Assistant works in the Hue app

If you’re not currently in the Netherlands, Belgium, or Luxembourg, you can only use the new AI assistant in the Philips Hue app via a workaround. I used a VPN service to virtually travel to Holland. After changing the language of the Hue app to English in the iOS settings, I was able to try out the AI assistant right away.

A simple voice command such as “Make a rainbow” is enough and the assistant starts its work. First, it recommends a suitable, existing scene from the Hue light scene gallery. If that’s not enough for you, you can also create a completely new scene. You can then activate this in a room or zone of your choice.

The Hue AI Assistant is available free of charge. It is not yet known when it will be rolled out in other countries and languages. However, George Yianni promises: “This is the start of an ambitious journey to put a lighting designer and smart home expert in all our users pockets.”

  1. Is it an iOs fature only?
I have a Galaxy S23ultra running on Android, I’m living in Belgium and i didn’t get anything yet.
Thanks for your blog. I visit it every day

    1. It could be for the moment, there was an iOS update last week. I have no Android to try it.

  2. Users: “We want to use the smart button to switch Hue Secure to guarded mode”

Signify: “We heard you, you want an AI button in the app to generate some colors for the bulbs, but only for one country and if your language isn’t set to the native language of that country. Got it!”
