Philips Hue introduced its first Hue Secure cameras just over two years ago. Since then, there has been a first hardware upgrade with 2K resolution and a brand new product in the form of the Hue Secure Video Doorbell. However, Apple Home is still not supported as a smart home platform.
At the presentation in 2023, it was stated that the initial focus would be on Amazon Alexa and Google Home. For Apple Home, the company would prefer to rely on the Matter standard once it supports cameras.
In September 2025, Philips Hue then issued the following statement in an official press release: “Later this year, the wired Hue Secure cameras, the wired 2K doorbell camera, and the contact sensors will integrate seamlessly into the Apple Home ecosystem.” Among other things, they promised a live view of the cameras in the Apple Home app.
The launch of Matter 1.5 with camera support
Today, the Connectivity Standards Alliance introduced version 1.5 of the Matter smart home standard. Among other things, it includes support for cameras. “Matter cameras can stream live video and audio thanks to WebRTC technology. This enables two-way communication and both local and remote access via standard STUN and TURN protocols. The specification also supports multi-stream configurations, pan/tilt/zoom control, detection and privacy zones, and flexible storage options, such as continuous or event-based recording to local or cloud destinations,” according to the official CSA announcement.
At first, I thought: This fits like a glove. Philips Hue announces support for Apple Home in 2025, and right on cue, Matter 1.5 is finally in the starting blocks. Exactly the path that was chosen as the desired one back in 2023.
Signify delivers sobering statement on Hue Secure and Matter
However, I then received a response from Signify that surprised me somewhat. Here’s what the manufacturer of Philips Hue has to say about the new Matter 1.5: “Signify is actively involved in the development of the Matter 1.5 standard and plans to transition our Direct Matter-enabled products to the new standard over time. There are currently no plans to support Direct Matter in our Hue Secure cameras. However, we are closely monitoring developments in this area.“
So it seems that the company does not want to rely directly on Matter after all, but may instead establish a classic ”HomeKit” connection to Apple Home. When I inquired about this, I was simply told that no specific timing could be given for Apple Home at this time.
At this point, we are still a long way from having the Hue Secure Video Doorbell automatically displayed on Apple TV as soon as someone rings the doorbell. Too bad…

after the new update, Hue Doorbell no longer appears on the Samsung OLED via SmartThings – before it appeared automatically, but did not load the video image – as a Hue product, Doorbell works better (the ring lights up, smooth video streaming even on mobile data, etc.), but I’m waiting for it to fly in SmartThings (otherwise it says on the box that it is compatible for nothing). Tomorrow I’ll install Bridge pro – who knows, maybe a miracle will happen.
Great breakdown of the situation between Matter 1.5 and Hue Secure! It’s interesting that Signify is still hesitant to adopt Direct Matter for cameras, despite being involved in development. Do you think this is more of a technical limitation, or a strategic decision to keep tighter control over their ecosystem?
Interesting read! It is good to see Matter 1.5 finally supporting cameras but it is surprising Philips Hue is not immediately adopting Direct Matter for Hue Secure. Hopefully, Apple Home integration will arrive soon for a smoother smart home experience.
