Practical tips for Philips Hue and Sonos Voice Control

Local voice control

Sonos Voice Control supports Philips Hue. While this may sound relatively uninteresting given that voice control with Alexa or Siri has been available for quite some time, it is actually quite exciting upon closer inspection. Sonos Voice Control works locally on Sonos speakers and does not require a cloud connection. Your voice commands remain on the device and are not sent over the network. Even the light command to the Hue Bridge does not leave your home network.

The new voice control, which is currently only available in English and French, can be set up via the Hue app. If you click on the plus symbol in the “Smart Home” section of the settings, you can select Sonos Voice Control and set it up in just a few steps. An internet connection is required briefly to link the two accounts, but is not needed afterwards.

Basic commands such as “Hey Sonos, turn on the lights in the kitchen” should be self-explanatory. However, I have a few more tips to make controlling your Philips Hue lights via your Sonos speakers even easier.

How to control Philips Hue even better with Sonos Voice Control

If you use the same names for your Sonos speakers and rooms in the Philips Hue app, the voice control will automatically establish the correct link. If you say “Hey Sonos, turn on the lights” in the kitchen, the lights in the kitchen will turn on. If you change room names in the Hue app, Sonos will automatically recognize the changes—but this can take up to 24 hours.

If you use specific commands such as “Hey Sonos, turn on the living room,” only the lights in that room will be turned on. Smart plugs will not be turned on automatically. If you want to do this, you will need to activate a specific scene. Alternatively, individual lamps can also be addressed and controlled directly, but you should make sure that you do not use duplicate names.

Unfortunately, multiple commands cannot yet be combined. So you can’t just say “Hey Sonos, turn on the kitchen and dim the lights in the dining room.” Time controls such as “Hey Sonos, turn on the bedroom at 7 a.m.” also don’t work yet. I hope that Sonos and Philips Hue will follow up with further updates.

  1. Works fine!
But, I had to delete & reinstall sonos voice control on my sonos devices
    Before that, and orders failed
