The Philips Hue app gets a new icon

Redesign with the latest update

Back in June, around the time of the release of the new Philips Hue Play Wall Washer, I noticed that Philips Hue had a new logo. The licensed manufacturer name “Philips” has been moved slightly into the background, with the focus now more on the brand name “Hue.” And not just on the packaging, but also on the Philips Hue website.

After a considerable delay, the changes have now also arrived in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. With version 5.58.0, Philips Hue has a new icon for the home screen, and the differences are unmistakable. Philips has been completely removed, and there is a new font.

How about a little trip down memory lane? You probably all remember what the previous, now replaced icon looked like. But do you remember what the Philips Hue icon looked like in the early days, around ten years ago? Here you can see the rather black icon of the “Gen 1” app:

However, the icon on the home screen is not the only change; something has also changed in the app itself. The start screen in the app has also been modified. Previously, it mainly featured the Philips logo, accompanied by small lettering reading “Philips Hue.” Here, too, there is no longer any mention of Philips; instead, you are greeted by the Hue lettering, including a stylish color gradient.

A functional innovation in the Philips Hue app

With the update to version 5.48.0, the Philips Hue app not only gets a visual makeover, but also a small new feature. In the individual rooms and zones, suitable scenes are now suggested that match the type of room. After all, it’s highly likely that you’ll need different scenes in your living room, on your terrace, or in your bedroom.

If you discover any other changes that are not part of the official changelog in the App Store, I would be happy to hear about them in the comments or directly via email.

  1. No sign of this update on Android for me. Maybe it’s on a phased rollout.

Android app added dynamic theming on the icon a while ago which was nice to see.
