More interesting details about the Hue Solo Lightstrip

Available in 3, 5 and 10 metre lengths

Even before the official launch on Tuesday, I was able to tell you that Philips Hue will be launching another light strip. The Hue Solo Lightstrip is now available – in three versions. The 3 metre long light strip is available exclusively from the Philips Hue online shop, while the 5 and 10 metre lengths will also be available from independent retailers.

Before I go into more detail about the prices, I would like to take a look at the technical details. The light strip itself is exactly the same as the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus, which we have known for years. The distance between the LEDs and the brightness are the same.

But there are also some differences. The cable is firmly connected to the slightly differently shaped power supply unit. In addition, although the Hue Solo Lightstrip can be shortened every 33 centimetres, it cannot be extended by simply plugging it in. If you cut it off at the contacts, it is theoretically possible to extend it using the adapter for cut-off Lightstrips. However, this part is only included with the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus base-set.

That’s how much cheaper the Hue Solo Lightstrip is

If you can foresee that you won’t need an extension in the future, the Hue Solo Lightstrip is surprisingly cheap by Hue standards – especially compared to the Hue Lightstrip Plus. With the latter, the 2 metre long basic set costs 89.99 euros and a 1 metre long extension 24.99 euros.

  • Hue Solo Lightstrip (3 metres) for 69.99 euros
  • Hue Solo Lightstrip (5 metres) for 89.99 euros
  • Hue Solo Lightstrip (10 metres) for 159.99 euros

If you calculate the costs based on the regular list prices, 5 metres of Lightstrip Plus would cost a hefty 165 euros and 10 metres of Lightstrip Plus would even cost 290 euros. Of course, the Lightstrip Plus has been available for longer and is already cheaper in stores, but in the current price comparison 5 metres still cost 133 euros.

If you can live with the fairly marginal restrictions, then the Hue Solo Lightstrip is actually a very attractive story from the Hue shelf in my view.

  1. Delighted to have purchased the 3m Philips Hue Solo. However the power supply unit and cord is too short. The extension lead for other products dont fit as they are 5.5mm and I think the Hue SOlo is 6mm.

Please can you help – I need to extend the power cable on the hue Solo – can you suggest a product? Thank you

    1. The Hue lightstrips always used a bigger connector on the control box end than on the power supply end. Possibly you could use a power supply from any other Hue product along with a longer and/or extension cable? At least that is what I am hoping will work as I’m interested in using a 10 m Solo lightstrip all around the ceiling of my tiny bedroom which would require a power cable of at least 2.5 m or so…

  2. Hi,
I also have the same problem that the power cable is too short. I don’t believe other Hue products will work as the power connector is a nonstandard size at 5.9mm rather than the usual 5.5mm. Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Regards
