Hueblog: Still no outdoor smart plug from Philips Hue

Still no outdoor smart plug from Philips Hue

Eve Energy chooses a different path

We kicked off the gardening season at home at the weekend. The weather was great and we took the opportunity to give all the plants and bushes a good trim and tidy up a bit. A lot has piled up in the dark months.

There hasn’t been much new from Philips Hue for outdoor use in recent months. Sure, the new Hue Secure cameras can be used there and the Hue Dymera also has a place outside. But we’re still waiting for a smart plug for outdoor use, for example.

If you’re getting your hopes up, I’m sorry to disappoint you. I don’t see a suitable solution on the horizon. One reason for this is probably the regulations that Philips Hue wants to adhere to. When it comes to water protection, simple adapter plugs are probably a bit problematic and it would come down to a solution with a cable, like the one Osram launched on the market years ago.

The solutions from other manufacturers

This is probably also the reason why the German manufacturer Eve Systems has opted for fixed cabling for the new Eve Energy Outdoor and is not launching a simple adapter plug on the market. The new outdoor socket is due to be launched in May – and at a hefty price of 79.95 euros.

However, direct connection to the Hue Bridge is not possible anyway, just for the sake of completeness. Instead, the Eve Energy Outdoor socket relies entirely on HomeKit and the new Matter standard, with communication taking place via Thread.

Check your local Philips Hue Online Store for availability of Hue products in your country. There you will also find all the technical information and prices.

Over the last few years, I've become a real expert when it comes to Hue & HomeKit. I now have over 50 lamps and numerous switches in use. I'm happy to share my experiences with you in my little blog.

    1. You’re comparing a chinese manufacturer using cloud-service and a mandatory hub to a german local-only no-hub product. Depends on your needs but they’re both good options

  1. I took a regular hue plug and stuck it in small weatherproof electronics box I got from amazon for ~$15. It’s been working great for a few years now for turning my outdoor string lights on and off.
