FabianThe update to version 4.43 of the Philips Hue app is now available for download. The update description reads quite interestingly, because it says: “You can now invite users to your Philips Hue Home with an invitation link. In your Philips Hue account, go to Manage members > Add new member to send a link.”
Is member management finally usable now? At least it is now possible to invite other people to a Hue installation and also give them remote access. However, there are still glaring weaknesses in Member Management that turn what should be a useful function into an absolute joke.
Why the member administration is absolutely useless
Newly invited persons are automatically assigned the status “lighting” and should be able to control lamps in the home. Only then can they be upgraded to administrator. First of all, this idea is not wrong.
However, the lighting status does not properly restrict access to the Hue installation. It is still possible to delete lamps or accessories and to change important settings in the system. It is still full access to the Hue installation, so to speak.
The second big problem: Even after the update, only one Hue Bridge can be assigned to an existing Hue account. So if you already use Philips Hue and are invited by a friend to his installation, you have to log in with a second email address and cannot use the existing account.
Good idea, poor implementation
I still think the idea of member management is great. Children or regular visitors in particular don't need full access to the system, but should still be able to control the lights in the house via the app. At the moment, however, the implementation is simply too bad, there is still a lot to do.
